Headteacher's Newsletters 2026

Bourn Primary Academy
15th May 2026

This week Year 6 children have been taking their SATs tests. I would like to say a huge "well done" to all the children. They worked incredibly hard, and demonstrated fantastic perseverance and courage.
This week I have had a few questions in relation to parental controls on devices at home and so I wanted to re-share the NSPCC advice which can be found here. I hope that you find this information helpful and of use.
Around School
I would like to thank all the children and adults in school this week for their flexibility and support to our Year 6's. The children have had to be extra quiet during the tests and had playtimes at different times to accommodate the testing schedule. I would like to also thank all the parents, carers and those who have supported the children at home. Thank you all for supporting Year 6 so well!
This Tuesday we had our Summer 1 Full Governors Meeting. The 5 key points from the meeting were:
- The Governing Body will be escalating the ongoing remedial works that need to be undertaken on the Climbing Frame
- Governors are exploring the option of adding solar panels to the school building
- Governors were happy with the Headteacher's report and professional challenge
- Governors recognised the very positive recent SEND parent survey report
- Governors have updated their monitoring template to also include SIAMS information
I hope that you all have a lovely weekend

It has been another busy week in school this week despite only being 4 days. On Tuesday we received our Resus training (a core piece of training in order to be able to teach swimming sessions) and are very excited about the pool being commissioned for this year's swimming season. Thank you to all the volunteers who were also able to attend this session. More details about swimming days and times are to follow.
This week we have also received recognition for our high attendance figures from FFT (Fischer Family Trust)

Bourn to Run 2026
/i/video/Bourn_to_Run_2026_promo_landscape_v2.mp4
This year’s Bourn to Run will be on Sunday 27th September. Registration is open and you can save 10% on registration fees with an early bird offer, which runs until 17 July.
Now in its 19th Year, Bourn to Run involves a family friendly 3km running route and a competitive 10km trail. As always, it will be an inclusive event that will spark or expand your enjoyment of running, with the toddler dash for even the youngest participants. There will also be activities, a BBQ and raffle on the village recreation ground on the day.
The event raises vital funds for Bourn School Association which go towards educational day trips, running costs of the swimming pool, handwriting scheme resources and new playground toys. Last year, children at the school also enjoyed a percussion workshop with junk instruments, which was funded by the money raised in 2024.
This event could not go ahead without the generosity of sponsors, local businesses and landowners, or the commitment of parent volunteers. Entry fees cover the cost of safely putting on the event, but sponsorship and donations are required to raise much needed money for the school. If you are interested in helping us by sponsoring or helping to run the event, please email info@bourntorun.com.
Please see below for the inspirational video!

Thank you to everyone who attended Parent Consultations this week. I know that the team put in a great deal of work preparing for these meetings with you all and I trust that you found the information shared with you useful and supportive.
On Wednesday Years 3 and 4 carried out their Bikeability training sessions and it was lovely to see so many cyclists in school developing their cycling skills.
Moving forwards, at Full Governors meetings we will be concluding the meeting by having '5 Key Points from Governors'. I will then share this in the Newsletter that follows the meeting. I hope that this will give a further insight into the hard work, support and challenge that the Governors provide to the Senior Leadership Team here at Bourn.
I hope that you all have lovely Bank Holiday weekends and fingers crossed for good weather!

24th April 2026

Next week is Parent Consultation week. The teaching team are looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child(ren)s progress and next steps. The arrangements for these consultations will be the same as in Autumn Term consultations
Following on from the Safeguarding visit by CAM Trust last week, I just wanted to share some initial feedback from The Director of Inclusion and Safeguarding:
Safeguarding at Bourn CofE Primary is effective. The school is joyful and pupils are happy. At the start of the day, when the gates open children literally run to the building with smiles on their faces. Parents speak positively about the school, the support that their children receive and the way that the school has improved this academic year. During unstructured times the pupils interact positively with each other and the Year 6 mentoring programme has a positive impact on the younger pupils in the school.
I would like to personally thank the whole school community for all the support, hard work and dedication in this area of school life. It is wonderful to receive this external feedback.
Around School
This week in school has been another busy week.
Across the school I have been able to speak to so many children who are able to speak confidently and clearly about their learning. It has also been fantastic to look at the books with the children and compare their first piece of learning from September to their most current piece and celebrate all the progress that they have made.
On Monday we waved farewell to Year 4 as they boarded the bus for their residential visit to Grafham Water. There has been so much positive feedback from the staff about how well the children have behaved, how well they have challenged themselves and supported each other. The children were enthusiastically telling me all about the Grafham Challenge, sailing, high ropes, archery and canoeing alongside how they have set and beat their own targets. It has been wonderful to hear such enthusiasm and it is clear that the children have grown in confidence and abilities over the course of their time at Grafham. My thanks go to the teaching team for all the hard work in organising and running such a successful residential, the children for their 'can do' attitude and behaviour and also to all the family members who have supported the children to be ready for the residential - thank you.
I hope that you all have lovely weekends

On Monday we were visited by author Keith Hatton. He led a fantastic assembly at the start of the day and then held reading and writing workshops across the school. I was fortunate enough to visit some of the classrooms whilst Keith was in them and the children were completely engrossed in their activities and spoke very excitedly about the author visit.
I wanted to share with you a free webinar that has been shared with me about Cyber Choice and Online Safety events. These session are suitable for parents and carers of children in Year 5 and above. The flier can be found here

On Monday I was joined by Shelley Desborough (CAM Trust Director of Primary Education) where we reviewed progress on the School Development Plan as well as carrying out a learning walk through all classrooms. It was noted about the recent improvements in the consistency of our working walls, the impact of a new writing approach, an improvement in presentation in the children's books and the calm, purposeful environment in the school. My thanks go to the whole team, the children and parents for our continued efforts and support of our School Development Plan - it is excellent to see the impact of our work.
This week we have also had a large number of enrichment activities. Keith Hatton was in on Monday, on Thursday we had our Science Week Drama workshops (Our World, Our Future) and Year 6 visited Bourn Airfield as part of their current topic. The BSA also ran the Mother's Day Gift Shop and we had many parent helpers come in to read with the children. On Thursday 26th February PCSO John Coppard visited the school once more. This time he joined me on 'Gate Duty' in the morning and followed this by delivering a whole school 'Personal Safety' talk in Collective Worship. PCSO Coppard spoke to the children about how to stay safe and personal responsibilities. We will look to book in PCSO Coppard for future visits later on in the academic year.
Parking on Hall Close
I have had reports of some cars being parked and blocking paths on Hall Close which is resulting in the children needing to walk in the road to get to school. If you are parking on Hall Road please can I ask you to do so in a way that does not restrict pedestrian movement - thank you for your co-operation with this.

Welcome to Spring 2!
It has been lovely to hear from the children about their half term activities and how much they enjoyed their break.
This week the children have been starting their new topics with a real enthusiasm and it has been wonderful seeing children bringing in books and pictures from home linked to their learning - thank you for supporting the children with this.
We have also started to use 'Pathways to Write' as our Writing curriculum. This award winning programme will develop further our mastery approach to the curriculum that we teach Bourn children. The feedback from children so far has been positive when I have been speaking with them.
I have also seen mastery skills being developed well in maths this week with some excellent subitising being used by the younger children and the older children have been using representations to be able to explain their mathematical thinking and understanding.
This week we also hosted the CB23 Humanities quiz for Bourn and four other visiting primary schools. The questions were challenging and the children who took part worked very well as a team. We will celebrate their achievement in next week's Community Celebration Assembly.
I hope that you all have lovely weekends,

This week in school it has been lovely to be able to reflect with the children about the learning and progress achieved over the past half term. When looking in the children's books with them it is fantastic to see the progress that the children have been making and their enthusiasm for the lessons taught. A particular highlight this week for me has been when discussing equality where the children were thinking very creatively over how the world could be made a fairer place.
I have also been impressed with how the children are increasingly presenting their learning in a neat and tidy way. This is so important as it allows for the children to look back on their previous learning quickly enabling them to use it to build new learning on.
This Wednesday was the School Disco - my thanks go to all involved in the organising and delivery of the event. The children clearly had a fantastic time - thank you.
I hope you have a lovely, very well deserved Half Term break and I look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday 23rd February for what I am certain will be a busy Spring 2 term.

Updated behaviour policy
I just wanted to let all parents and carers know that we have updated our behaviour policy. This is a piece of work that as a team we are very proud of and confident that it will have a positive impact in all areas of school. We have already seen it impacting positively and look forward to seeing further impact across the school. It will be added to the policies page shortly and we will inform you when this has happened
I have been asked to share a message from the Bourn to Run team which I am more than happy to do for this fabulous event. This event supports the school so much and so if anyone is able to help please do so - thank you.
We need you to keep Bourn to Run going!
This year will be the 19th Bourn to Run, a brilliant 10km and 3km running event that has raised nearly £12,000 for the school every year for the last four years.
Several parents are stepping down after many years on the organising committee, and we urgently need new volunteers to help keep this much-loved event going. You don’t need special skills — just a willingness to help as part of a friendly team.
If you can help in any way or are interested in finding out more, please get in touch — reply to this email and Debs will pass on your details.
On Wednesday I attended my Designated Safeguarding Lead refresher and so the Safeguarding team in school will remain as me being Designated Safeguarding Lead and Mrs Wheatman and Miss Hensleigh as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads.
Around School
This week in school we have had another busy week of learning with the children engaging in a wide range of activities. I have seen some excellent examples of maths 'mastery' in action where the children have been applying their prior learning to new concepts and ideas. I have also been most impressed with the children's writing this week - particularly so the Iron Age and Persuasive text writing that I have had the privilege to read. Selected children also competed in the Friendship Games and Maths challenge and I have had reports that these children were impeccably well behaved and had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
I hope you have lovely weekends

Lost property
Please can I ask for all items of clothing to be labelled.
Writing names on all items of clothing will help us to return items to the correct owners - especially at this time of year when children may be wearing multiple layers that are removed when the children come in from play times.
I just wanted to provide an update over attendance. Our whole school attendance percentage starting from the beginning of the Autumn term is 97.2%. Nationally over the same period of time attendance data is 94.8% and for the local Authority it is 95%. Thank you to everyone for ensuring that Bourn children's attendance remains very high - this is so vital for children and their learning. We also have 113 children who currently have 'excellent attendance' - 97% or higher.
Around School
This week I was joined by Dawn Deacon (our Ely Diocese Regional Adviser (EDRA)). We visited classrooms and spoke to children about their learning and the progress in books. It was lovely to see all the recent school developments in practice and children enthusiastically learning.
When I have been around school this week I have seen many children demonstrating 'valued behaviour' ensuring that teaching and learning time is optimised.
I hope you have lovely weekends

CB23 Public Speaking Grand Final
On Monday afternoon I had the pleasure and privilege of attending the CB23 Public Speaking finals with Nola, Gus, Enid and Ivana. The children stood on the Peterhouse stage and spoke in front of other children, parents and teachers from the other CB23 schools. The Bourn children represented themselves and school brilliantly - their speeches were excellent, their behaviour was impeccable and the level of respect that they showed the other finalists was most impressive - thank you!

Thank you to everyone who has been observing the zig-zags, bus parking and double yellow lines on drop off and collection. We really do appreciate your support in making sure that the children can enter and exit the site in a safe manner. May I just remind everyone that no vehicle should be parking on the double yellow lines at the end of the school day either - thank you for your ongoing support.
Around School
On Tuesday the Bikeability team led a 'Learn to Ride' session for specific children - it was fantastic to see the children gain in confidence and ability in riding their bikes.
On Thursday Year 5 attended Young Voices - we certainly had some tired looking faces Friday morning however I hear that the children were incredibly well behaved and when speaking to some of the children it was clear to see how enjoyable an experience it was. My thanks to the teaching team for being able to take the children the parent volunteers and for all the families support with a very late collection!
I hope you have lovely weekends

Smartphone Free childhood
Thank you to all who were able to attend the evening presentation on Wednesday - we hope that you found the information shared useful and informative. More information will be shared in due course.
We have noticed that on occasion the pedestrian gate at the bottom of the driveway is being propped open. Please can we ask for parents and carers to not prop open the gate so that we continue to have a secure site during the teaching day. Thank you for your co-operation with this.
Around School
This week Mrs Desborough, Director of Primary Education for Cam Academy Trust, visited us. Mrs Desborough and I visited all classrooms, spoke to children and conducted a book look. During this visit it was excellent to see the calm learning environment and children in classes focussing on their learning. It was also clear to see so many 'Valued Behaviours' in action.
A couple of requests if I may.
Firstly - if there are roadworks on your journey to school please can I ask, if you can, to leave a little earlier to accommodate for this. The morning work that the teachers plan is crucial in the children's learning journey.
Lastly - if there is a change to the collection arrangements for your child, please can you let Debs in the Office know by lunchtime so that we can make sure to get all the messages to the teachers in good time. I appreciate that things may change in the afternoon however if you do know earlier and can let us know we would really appreciate it, thank you.
I hope you have lovely weekends

Cold weather clothing
Just a quick reminder - please can all parents and carers ensure that the children come to school with appropriate clothing to keep warm when outside. Unless there is adverse weather we will be going outside at playtimes and lunchtime and so the children will need clothes to be able to 'wrap up warm'. Thank you for your help with this.
I have had some questions in relation to how best to set up new electronic devices that may have been given to children over the Christmas period and so I thought it may be of help to share the following NSPCC parental control advice. Please click here for the guidance.
Around school
Happy New Year to all - I hope that you all had a restful and relaxing break.
This week in school the children have settled back into their learning very well and we have been most impressed with how the children have tackled their new topics.
On Tuesday in Collective Worship, in keeping with our School Development Priority number 2, we have launched our updated Valued Behaviours as part of our behaviour curriculum. We spoke to the children about the Valued behaviours to ensure that children are learning to the very best of their abilities. The valued behaviours have been grouped into 4 R's. The 4 R's are Readiness, Resilience, Respect and Relationships.
The following sign is in all classrooms and so I thought it may be of use to share it with parents and carers also.

Reflection on Autumn Term 2025
Since the 3rd September the children have been in school for 14 and a half weeks! Over these weeks I have seen them grow in confidence, develop their skills and gain new knowledge, tackle challenges with a 'can do' approach and work incredibly hard in all aspects of their learning. It has been wonderful to look through the children's books with them and speak about their learning journey - I hope it has made the children that I have been able to speak to incredibly proud of their achievements. This does not happen just by chance and so I would like 'to do a few Thank You's':
The children - thank you for all your hard work, determination and resilience, you should be very proud of your achievements and I cannot wait to see your learning journey continue.
Parents and carers - thank you for supporting the children and staff to allow for the children to be 'ready to learn' and being able to engage with their curriculum so effectively.
Staff - thank you for your steadfast approach in ensuring that the children's experiences here at Bourn are as excellent as they are.
Governors - thank you for your ongoing support and challenge to ensure that the strategic direction of the school aligns to the children's needs.
BSA and volunteers - thank you for giving up your time and for supporting and organising many wonderful school events. They really do enrich the children's lives so much.
Should you have any concerns in relation to an adult or child's welfare whilst school is closed for the Christmas break please can I ask that you follow the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Safeguarding Partnership Board advice which can be found here.
Around school
It has been another busy week in school. Along with the 'usual learning' we have also had a Christingle service either led by Matt Phillips or by the Ely Diocese Central team. These were wonderful events and the children spoke so excitedly about them.
On Wednesday it was our Christmas Lunch. It was lovely to see so many in their party wear or Christmas jumpers. The children thoroughly enjoyed their lunch and my thanks goes to Jules and the team for a fantastic Christmas lunch.
Today it was our Christmas Service in Church - thank you to everyone who was able to come along and support with the event and help to escort the children to and from Church. We hope that you enjoyed the service as much as we did.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Tuesday 6th January ready for another jam -packed, exciting term.
